Design for Social Change of the Year 2023: Batter Up!

Design for Social Change of the Year 2023: Batter Up!

⚾ “Breaking Barriers from Jackie to Pumpsie” and “Negro Leagues Béisbol,” tells the story of African American and Afro-Latino blockade busters and apex athletes who transformed baseball history and opened up the playing field (diamond) for all players. Commissioned by the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and perfectly and powerfully created by Flyleaf Creative Inc. under the direction of Lead Designer Caroline Carew, the design uses custom templates and cohesive visual themes to provide cultural context and a timeline for these groundbreaking ball players.

⚾ Through a vivid combination of historical photos, video, iconography, and carefully crafted copy, both designs take their audience on an educational and immersive journey that artfully tells the story of baseball integration. The “Negro Leagues Béisbol” also has a multi-lingual option so people can enjoy it in Spanish and English.

⚾ Interactive components elevate both designs, including flippable “baseball cards” to elaborate on the importance of pivotal players and fit seamlessly into the sporty theme. A zoom-out/zoom-in timeline allows visitors to delve into specifics or certain eras as they wish, making the experience personalized and memorable. Immersive and historically significant, both these designs more than deserve our 2023 award for Design for Social Change of the Year.
